“I Remember…”

A friend of mine from college recently died.  Reading some tributes to him I saw this one from a fellow classmate: “I wasn't close friends with Doug at FC. We always spoke when we saw each other on campus. I remember that he was the very first person to introduce himself and speak to me at FC. That meant a lot to me because I am from a small town and I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to make friends. I can still remember that day like it was yesterday.”  Like the woman who anointed Jesus, what he did was told as a memorial to him (Matt 26:13).

Many people when they visit a church are worried about how they will be received, if they will be treated in a friendly manner.  Know that first impressions are lasting impressions.  What do people remember about their visit here?  Do they remember how you went out of your way to make them feel welcome, maybe even being the very first person to introduce yourself?  Instead, could it possibly be how you walked right past them like they were in your way?  I have witnessed both here and seen the impression it made upon visitors.

You don’t have to become close friends with everyone who visits with us, but know that a simple kind word will be remembered.  Take the time and make the effort to always speak to visitors.  It may determine what they say in remembrance of you.
